What a CNC drill is and how it works
CNC drilling is the operation of drilling and tapping a part with a tool guided by numerical control, which programs the depth, the feed rate and the position of each hole. In industrial machining there is usually no machine dedicated solely to drilling: this operation is integrated into the work cycle of a machining center or a CNC lathe.
Advantages of CNC drilling over conventional systems
Compared with manual drilling, numerical control makes it possible to program the exact position of each hole, repeat the drilling pattern across an entire series of parts and combine this operation with milling or turning in the same cycle, without changing machines or repositioning the part.
Vurcon CNC drilling machines
Vurcon does not sell CNC drills as stand-alone machines. Drilling and tapping are carried out with the automatic tool changer of our machining centers and our CNC lathes, which use drills and taps within the same machining program as the milling or turning of the part.
Applications of CNC drilling in industry
CNC drilling and tapping are used on practically any machined part that needs clamping holes, bolt holes or threads: brackets, flanges, plates and mechanical components in general. In the Vurcon range it is an operation complementary to milling or turning, not a separate process.
Frequently asked questions about CNC drilling
Does Vurcon sell CNC drill presses?
No. Vurcon manufactures and distributes machining centers and CNC lathes; drilling and tapping are carried out as an operation within the work cycle of these machines, not with a stand-alone CNC drill.
What machine do I need if my part only requires drilling and tapping?
It depends on the type of part and whether it involves other machining operations. Check with our technical team to assess whether a machining center or a CNC lathe better suits your needs.
Can holes be tapped with Vurcon machines?
Yes, the automatic tool changer of our machining centers and CNC lathes allows taps to be included in the same machining program.
