CNC machinery for mining and earthmoving

For rollers, shafts, hydraulic cylinders, gear rings and bushes in mining and earthmoving equipment, the backbone is a sturdy CNC lathe with generous swing and spindle bore: Vurcon's PL63 and PL80 flat bed lathes offer Ø630 and Ø800 mm swing, a Ø104 mm bore and 1,000 to 4,000 mm between centres. For mill shafts, pulleys and large rollers, the PL140/5000 and PL180/8000 large-format lathes reach Ø1,850 mm swing and 8,000 mm between centres.

Typical parts

  • Conveyor and idler rollers — turning the shell and seats, facing the ends and through shafts; short runs of the same reference.
  • Mill, pulley and drive shafts — long, heavy parts: bearing seats, keyways and threads between centres.
  • Hydraulic cylinders — barrels and rods for shovels, dump trucks and drill rigs: long turning, seal grooves and threads.
  • Gear rings and pinions — turning the blank, hub and outside diameter before gear cutting.
  • Bushes and sleeves — inside and outside turning, grease grooves; fast replacement during maintenance.
  • Pulleys — rim, hub and bores, often reclaiming worn parts.

Machining challenges

Mining is driven by maintenance: big parts, one-offs or short runs, and shutdown windows that will not wait. Often the job is reclaiming a worn or hard-faced part, with uneven stock and tough material, and getting it back to size fast. That calls for a rigid lathe with torque at low speed that is quick to program for each job.

Long, heavy shafts and rollers need distance between centres with margin and, on slender parts, a steady rest. Workshops serving the mining industry, in Chile and across Latin America, typically pair a large lathe for shafts and pulleys with a PL63 or PL80 for daily work and a cycle lathe for repairs.

How we work

Tell us the diameter, length, weight and material of the parts you repeat most and of your largest one. We then propose machine and configuration: distance between centres, control and options. If you are in Chile or elsewhere in Latin America, ask us for a quote all the same; in April 2027 we will be at EXPOMIN in Santiago, Chile (read more).

The PL140/5000, the PL63x2000 and several EL60 models are in stock in Spain. Installation and commissioning, operator training, service and spare parts, backed by Grupo Ferrotall.

Frequently asked questions

Which lathe do I need for conveyor rollers?

For most rollers, a PL63 or PL80 flat bed lathe: Ø630 or Ø800 mm swing and up to 4,000 mm between centres. For large-diameter rollers we move up to the large-format lathes.

PL63 or PL80?

Both have a Ø104 mm spindle bore and 1,000 to 4,000 mm between centres. The PL80 swings Ø800 mm over bed and Ø500 mm over carriage with 15 kW; the PL63 swings Ø630 and Ø340 mm with 11 kW. Choose by the diameter of your largest part.

Which machine suits mill shafts and large pulleys?

A large-format lathe: the PL140/5000 swings Ø1,440 mm with 5,000 mm between centres and the PL180/8000 Ø1,850 mm with 8,000 mm, both with a Ø142 mm spindle bore.

Is a cycle lathe a good fit for repair work?

Yes. EL lathes are programmed through cycles on a 15" touch screen, which is practical for one-off parts. The EL80 swings Ø800 mm and reaches 5,000 mm between centres.

Do you sell to Chile and Latin America?

Yes, you can request a quote from anywhere in the region and we prepare it with the machine configured for your part. In April 2027 we will also be at EXPOMIN in Santiago, Chile.
