CNC machinery for the energy and wind industry

Flanges, rotor shafts, hubs and slewing rings for energy and wind call for large swing, power to rough forgings and a rigid machine to drill bolt circles: Vurcon's large-format PL140/5000 and PL180/8000 lathes swing Ø1,440 and Ø1,850 mm over the bed, with 5,000 and 8,000 mm between centres and 30 and 37 kW. For housings, hubs and flange faces, the DC1020 and DC1330 double column machining centres offer 2,050 to 3,100 mm of X travel with a BT50 spindle.

Typical parts

  • Flanges — facing mating faces, turning inside and outside diameters and drilling the bolt circle.
  • Rotor and main shafts — long bearing seats, tapers, threads and grooves, turned between centres with tight concentricity.
  • Hubs — castings with bores and blade faces at several angles: boring and milling in very few set-ups.
  • Slewing rings — turning raceways and faces, then drilling and tapping mounting holes.
  • Turbine and gearbox housings — facing joint planes, boring bearing housings and drilling cover patterns.

Machining challenges

Energy work means big forgings and castings with uneven stock and tough steels. Roughing needs torque at low speed: the PL140/5000 runs from 12 to 600 rpm with 30 kW and the PL180/8000 steps up to 37 kW. Flange faces then have to be flat and bearing seats concentric, so it pays to finish without re-clamping.

Hole patterns are the other critical point. On the lathe they can be done with the PL140/5000's Y-axis turret or the PL180/8000's driven turret option; for housings and hubs, the double column machine works several faces in a single clamping. Flanges and rings larger than the standard swing are scoped as a bespoke project.

How we work

Send us the drawing or, at least, diameter, length, weight and material, plus the operations you want on the machine. We then propose a lathe, a double column centre or both, with the right control and options, and advise on transport and foundations, which need planning early with machines of this size.

The PL140/5000 and DC1020 are in stock in Spain. Installation and commissioning, operator training, service and spare parts are handled by us, within Grupo Ferrotall.

Frequently asked questions

Which lathe do I need for wind flanges and shafts?

One whose swing exceeds the flange diameter and whose distance between centres exceeds the shaft. The PL140/5000 swings Ø1,440 mm with 5,000 mm between centres; the PL180/8000 swings Ø1,850 mm with 8,000 mm. For larger diameters we propose a bespoke project.

Can I drill the bolt circle on the lathe?

Yes, with live tooling: the PL140/5000 has a 4-station turret with Y-axis and the PL180/8000 offers a driven turret as an option. If the flange carries a lot of milling, moving it to the double column centre may pay off.

How much power do I need to rough forgings?

It depends on material and depth of cut, but these parts need torque at low speed. The PL140/5000 has 30 kW with a 12–600 rpm spindle and the PL180/8000 has 37 kW.

Which machining centre suits hubs and housings?

A double column machine with a BT50 spindle: the DC1020 travels 2,050 × 1,100 × 600 mm and the DC1330 3,100 × 1,400 × 800 mm, both at 6,000 rpm and 15/18.5 kW.

Are machines available from stock?

Yes: the PL140/5000 lathe and the DC1020 double column centre are in stock in Spain. Everything else is configured to your part, with the lead time fixed in the quotation.
