What is CNC? Discover computer numerical control
The computer numerical control (CNC) is the system through which an operator can control the machining work of a tool. This control is carried out through a control panel and a software program. The commands executed from here are sent to the machine so that it follows the instructions given.
Numerical control is therefore responsible for controlling all of the machine's movements. These include not only the cut and its precision, but also speed, type of travel, etc. This makes the results much more precise, accurate and customized.
How CNC works
Computer numerical control is based on positioning along the X, Y and Z axes. Using these three axes, different automatic machining operations can be carried out on a part. The most common are cutting, drilling, milling, threading and roughing.
The first task is designing the part on a computer using a CAD program. CAD (computer-aided design) software is used to create and modify any design. It is a drawing technique used to define the color, layer, style and material properties of a part.
Once the final design is ready, the operator goes to the control panel of the machine tool to enter the commands needed to manufacture the part. The movements the machine will make are entered into the CNC by means of codes with various set instructions.
The main commands given to the tool are feed rate, depth, start or stop. However, everything will depend on the machine being used as well as on the part and the design to be produced. These commands can also include tool changes, positioning and other direction variables for the movements.
This is why each machine has its own different CNC program. Lathes and milling machines are the most common machine tools. But within them there are a number of types that perform different jobs on specific parts. Computer numerical control can be different on all of these machines.
Uses and applications of Computer Numerical Control
CNC machining is now used both in large companies and in small workshops, factories and businesses. It is used in cabinetmaking and carpentry workshops, for interior design work, industrial design, the textile industry and the manufacture of all kinds of metal parts.
The major industrial sectors consider CNC machines indispensable. The aeronautics, aerospace, steel, wind power and automotive sectors, among others, use machines of this type to manufacture all of their parts and components. Turbines, propellers, fuselage elements, parts for cars, ships, trains, etc.
CNC technology is also used in the electrical industry, as well as in any industry dedicated to metal manufacturing or extraction. In fact, virtually every industry today requires the use of computer numerical control.
All companies that carry out cutting, carving, drilling, threading or roughing of parts of any size will use CNC in their processes.
Advantages of using CNC
Computer numerical control is a system that has completely revolutionized industry. Its use offers a number of remarkable advantages to different industrial sectors.
The main advantage is the high production speed. Factories, workshops and industries that use CNC machine tools have become more productive. In fact, some systems can run 24 hours a day at a very high production level to meet market demands and needs.
CNC machining also offers great versatility and flexibility. The different commands executed from the CNC control panel allow the machine to perform different jobs. This makes it possible to produce a large number of designs and work on parts of different sizes and shapes.
In addition, using CNC makes it possible to achieve better surface finishes on the part. The degree of precision and accuracy is maximal. Computerized work keeps the risk of error to a minimum, while giving the finished part a better final polish. In addition, the operator only has to enter the data into the CNC control panel for the machine to do all the work. This means that the worker's handling is minimal, greatly reducing the risk of an accident. CNC machines are much safer than manual ones.
