What CNC turning is and what it is used for

CNC turning is a machining process in which the part rotates, clamped in the spindle, while a cutting tool moves to remove material and shape turned parts: shafts, bushings, flanges, spindles or any part with cylindrical or conical geometry. The numerical control programs the tool path to repeat the operation accurately on every part.

Advantages of Vurcon CNC turning

CNC lathes make it possible to combine several operations (turning, facing, threading and, on models with live tooling, also milling and drilling) in the same work cycle, reducing the number of times the part has to be repositioned. The Vurcon range covers different configurations to suit part size and production volume.

CNC turning machinery

Vurcon manufactures and distributes three families of CNC lathes: the slant-bed lathes of the SBL series, geared to production with spindle speeds of up to 5,000 rpm; the flat-bed lathes of the PL/PLM series, for parts requiring a longer distance between centers; and the EL series electronic cycle lathes, with a 15-inch touchscreen.

CNC turning is common in the manufacture of mechanical components for machinery, automotive, capital goods and any production that requires turned parts with controlled tolerances and repeatability between batches.

What is the difference between a slant bed and a flat bed?

A slant bed makes chip evacuation easier and usually reaches higher spindle speeds; a flat bed offers a longer distance between centers for longer parts. The choice depends on the type of part to be machined.

Can you mill on a CNC lathe?

Yes, on models with live tooling it is possible to carry out milling and drilling operations without changing machines. Check with our technical team which models include this option.
